I needed a portrait that captured the complex journey of the last 49 years of my life. But I hated being in front of a camera and couldn't figure out how certain portrait photographs captured the essence of the subject. Within a minute of working with Joel Simpson, I suddenly understood the intimate relationship between subject and photographer and found myself openly communicating to Joel how I felt and who I was. The results caused me to gasp. If I were truly this woman then my hard-won victories were not for naught. I am most grateful to Joel for capturing my heart, my soul and my life in his photos.
