After interviewing several interior designers, we decided last May to hire Susan Marocco to help us furnish our living room and office, put the finishing touches on our dining room, and choose paint colors for our entire house—no small undertaking (as we’d already determined after living in our very unfinished home for almost a year). What distinguished her from the others we’d interviewed at the time was her obvious willingness to listen to our ideas with regard to each room and to incorporate them into her overall plan. We have been working with Susan for over six months now, and we are thrilled with the results thus far. She has created spaces we’d envisioned but could never have put together without her impeccable eye for color and design expertise.
When Susan first started with us, we had a new, large sofa in our living room—and nothing else. We knew we wanted a comfortable living room that could accommodate the wear and tear of our toddler and dog, one that could really be lived in. Our dining room was furnished with family heirlooms, but there was nothing pulling them all together. Our office had only a desk and an enormous number of books and files that needed homes. We hoped to have the house completely repainted and the rooms furnished in time for Christmas, when we would be hosting family for the first time. In her organized, unflappable fashion, Susan reached all of these goals, creating beautiful yet comfortable rooms that the whole family can enjoy for years to come.
The items Susan found while shopping for us illustrate her thoughtful approach to design. For instance, Susan suggested a unique storage ottoman with child-safe hinges for our living room; this gives us not only an elegant answer to where our daughter’s toys could be hidden away but also moveable extra seating. Likewise, Susan had the forethought to have the fabrics used on our chairs Scotch-guarded against inevitable spills. After we showed her an advertisement for a pricey chair that we really liked, Susan tracked down both it and a less expensive look-alike as an alternative; she graciously provided us with a variety of price points for every item we purchased through her. In addition, Susan confidently referred us to knowledgeable rug merchants and home audiovisual consultants and to highly skilled painters and drapery makers, all of whom played a part in transforming the house we bought over a year ago into what finally feels like our home.
